FROM THE DESK OF THE PROJECT COORDINATOR:

This formidable peace on our academic communities’ oriented organization started in one of Nigeria’s foremost Universities where the first identifiable confraternity was formed.

Notorious activities of cultists/gangsters were becoming intolerable. Students, lecturers, non-academic staffs and other academic inhabitants were been molested while going for early morning devotions, lectures or their daily activities. The campuses were no longer safe for its habitants due to rising surge for violence as results of cults/gangs clashes and intimidation. Initially, we introduce the martial art or other form of self-defense classes to the students for self protection and defense, most especially to the female students that were been being raped or assaulted. it worked for a while but could not withstand the geometric increase of cults/gangs members and the heavy use of dangerous weapons, such as small arms, cutlasses or knives, clubs, hockey sticks, battle axe, acids, juju or charms and so on. It is so saddened that the management were at cross road or handicapped, even the school securities are fragile old men and women that could not even catch a hen let alone going after young agile boys and girls. The violence became so intolerable that hardly would a student not be killed, maimed, raped or harassed in the academic community in a day. Some individuals, students and staffs collaborated with, the Student Union Governments S.U.G) and the managements of the institutions, under the umbrella of project Humanity to fight against these dangerous and ubiquitous groups.

We were able to bring under control the cult/gangsters activities, restore security of lives and property. The group project humanity has been working strong since then in various academic communities and environs, and it had undergone so much metamorphosis over the years of persecutions, rejections, acceptance, e.t.c till we became a non- governmental Organization called Community Leadership Initiative (CLI). It has been able to snatch the young ones from the devastating hand of cultism and gangsterism and the rehabilitation of those already involve.

A youth at peace with his/herself is a person who knows his/herself in all aspects – even the sides he/she might have wished were not there – and yet trusts his/herself to act with integrity as a result of positive character development from the family and the society. Peace is not just the absence of war but the in-depth of mutual relationships built on trust and respect for each other. The achievement of peace in our campuses is a collective issue that requires all hands on deck. And, since each of us represents a larger whole, we have to 'Be the change we want to see in the world' - Mahatma Gandhi. Several a times our actions or inactions have contributed to the problems?" We should face these thoughts openly, with sincerity, modesty, style and trust to create the possibility of a peaceful academic communities and the society.

Conflict is a daily reality in human endeavour. It requires a collective role to prevent conflict from happening, reduce and manage it when it does happen, and make the necessary adjustments or changes so that it won’t happen again or probably from turning into violence. In today’s society, world peace is necessary starting from the family to the society for global stability.

CLI maintains expertise’s in researching/investigating into the ever revolving world and activities of gangs/cults by carefully, systematically and technically investigating the following: Who and what are these violent cult/gang groups, why do students/youths join these cult groups? Recruitments techniques  and the initiation of prospective member, Character transformation after initiation, how they operate and neutralize their opponents, maintain discipline and obedience as regards to their tenets, what omen does it portend? Their affiliation with their godfathers that recruits them into crimes in the society for their selfish reasons, What are the implications on the individual, families, friends, the academic societies, the society and the nation? Can it ever be eradicated? What is the way forward and out?  See interview in one of the national daily: http://www.tribune.com.ng/15042009/tue/arts1.html

Experiences and researches have shown us at CLI that effective prevention of destructive gangs/cults conflict requires effective co-operative action before violence erupts. Quick and timely removal of flash, dark or notorious spots where cults/gangs conglomerate to show off and strategize to unleash terror on humanity is a good way of suppressing violence in our campus.

ABOUT COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE (CLI):

Community Leadership Initiative (Nigeria) NGO is an independent organization set up by a group of concerned individuals with diverse professional backgrounds to contribute to the fight against violent gangs/cults (otherwise known as cultism). It started as an anti-cult/ anti-gang group in 1995 at the foremost institution in Nigeria then, as project humanity, (where the first Confraternity was formed) to checkmate the incessant violent cult/gang activities, and clashes between warring gang/cult groups that are inimical to human rights and dignity.

CLI has pursued its four cardinal value; awareness, prevention, intervention and rehabilitation with a passion devoted to the restoration of quality character to renew the minds and strengthen the reasoning of youths/students, from an informed point of view, to have self worth and self value in order to shun deviant behaviours, such as, cultism, hooliganism, gangsterism, commercial sex hawking and other anti-social behaviours. See http://www.tribune.com.ng/17082009/features2.html

Our approach in resolving cult/gang related issues is through quiet diplomacy. It establishes and maintains confidence, creates space and trust for effective dialogue, and encourages reconciliation among the various cults/gangs group. Also, it creates an accord which is pre-requisites towards violence gangs/cults prevention and managements.

C.L.I is involved with the campaign against HIV/AIDS among gangs/cults and other academic inhabitants. It has been discovered from researched that 50% of cultists end up with the H.I.V virus and if they are informed, this number would be reduced. C.L.I has organized several youth based seminars/workshops for different institutions, several secondary schools, faith based organizations, parents and guardians and so on to stop the spread of these deadly virus.

Encouraging academic communities and the society of early and pro-active engagement over time through applying a human right informed, problem–solving, assistance–oriented approach, positive character development training/orientation, good leadership role, effective conflict resolution programs to educate the academic communities and the various cults/gangs on the need to shun violence and embrace peace.

We focus on counseling, reforming and rehabilitating youths/students that are involve in cultism/gangsterism and other anti-social vices like prostitution, drug abuse and addiction among others, and ready to renounce his/her evil ways for a quality life. We persuade youths/students involve in cult/gang to renounce their membership and embrace a cult/gangster free live.

CLI has achieved a lot over the years and has been able to restore peace and reconciliation to many homes that have lost their children to cults/gangs through its sister organization Youth and Family Regeneration Center (YFRC)

CLI works with governmental, faith-based organization, intergovernmental and non-governmental actors to disseminate information, empower youths/students groups, stimulate reflection, and initiate change and institutional development.

WHY THE ORGANIZATION

CLI believe we should all do our part in the fight against a pandemic that is threatening the survival of millions of youths/students in Nigeria and the world, as such; it needs a collective effort to prevent and or manage these violent gang/cult groups. The fight against cultism/gangsterism is strategize or target effort of waging war in academic communities and the society against the following:

  • The scourge of HIV/AIDS among our youths that maybe expose to during initiation, gang/cult rape, drinking and mixing of blood with other concoctions, drug addiction and usage, gigolo and lesbianism, and so on.
  • To discourage commercial sex hawking, cult/gang rape or male and female sexual harassment, gigolo, lesbianism, etc.
  • To discourage the peddling and use of drug in and out of the academic communities and society.
  • To discourage bullying/molestation/assault on the inhabitants in our academic inhabitants and the society.
  • To discourage youths/students from being used to rig, manipulate and cause havocs during elections by unscrupulous politicians.
  • To discourage examination malpractices that has impaired our educational system.
  • To stop violent cults/gangs from unleashing mayhem on themselves and others that have led to untimely death of youths of several thousands of youths and the destruction of properties.
  • To avoid the stigma of being branded a cultist that has led to complete withdrawal from families, friends, the society and so on.
  • To creating an enabling environs for the academic communities inhabitants and the society
  • Saving the youths/students from spiritual inclination to satanic ideology and orientation that leads to mind control and bondage.
  • To checkmating the creation of monsters for the society because an expelled or rusticated student is a time bomb waiting to exploded in the society.
  • To restore lost glory and integrity back to schools

Research and personal experiences on cult activities and daily emergence of gang/cult activities in our academic communities and society has shown that the personality change, such as erosion of beliefs, discarding of moral sense, addiction to drugs and sex, and treating life as a cheap commodity, a recruit undergoes after being recruited are devastating on the individual development, Educational Development, Societal Development, National and International Development. The avalanche of its effect is so enormous that it cannot be over-emphasized.

Therefore, upholding and encouraging individuals, families, concern authorities, the general public and the society at large, to implement the four cardinal point which is sin qua non for a peaceful academic community and society. A safe academic community is a safe society and a safe society is a safe world. Therefore all hands must be on deck to have academic communities and environs free from violent gang/cult groups by:

  • Renewing the minds of the various cult/gangsters groups to eschew violence and embrace peaceful association
  • Promoting the courage to face new challenges on the menace of cultism/gangster, and accept the responsibilities of shunning this illicit group that has lead many souls to destructive ends.
